CAPE CORAL, FLORIDA (October 13, 2014)TowBoatUS Cape Coral recently sponsored the Fish the 36 tournament to benefit Child Care of Southwest Florida’s (CCSWFL) scholarship program for children from low-income and working families. The event brought out anglers from all over Southwest Florida to money for the child scholarship fund at CCSWFL.

“We enjoy doing our part to support events such as this,” said Capt. Richard Paul of TowBoatUS Cape Coral. “It’s great to see people having fun on the water and supporting a great local cause, with a touch of friendly competition.”

The 36-hour fishing contest kicked off on Friday, October 3rd, 2014. Each team (consisting of one to four members) received a goody bucket and a list of 36 species – a combination of inshore and offshore fish – with points assigned by species. Competitors were encouraged to fish wherever and for as long as they like, for any of the 36 species they could catch. They could then trade photos of their fish for raffle tickets and great prizes.https://www.facebook.com/plugins/post.php?app_id=&channel=https%3A%2F%2Fstaticxx.facebook.com%2Fx%2Fconnect%2Fxd_arbiter%2F%3Fversion%3D46%23cb%3Df23242891b381e4%26domain%3Dtowboatuscapecoral.com%26origin%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Ftowboatuscapecoral.com%252Ffc1efde4960da%26relation%3Dparent.parent&container_width=450&href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fmedia%2Fset%2F%3Fset%3Da.10152746200042618.1073741829.262308132617%26type%3D1&locale=en_US&sdk=joey&width=466

Event organizer and publisher of Nautical Mile Magazine, Jim Griffiths, encouraged participants to, “Fish from a boat, pier, dock, bridge, or an aquarium, just make sure your secret item is in the photos, and aim for multiple species.”

After 36 hours, on October 5th, teams returned to Cape Harbour to trade their pictures for raffle tickets. Participants could choose from various prizes, and put raffle tickets into the corresponding buckets to increase their chances of winning that prize. An event lunch was provided by Lobster Lady, Ceno Grille, Smoke’n Pit BBQ, Lelulo’s Pizza and Fathom’s Restaurant (formerly The Joint at Cape Harbour).

“This year was not about raising money, it was about setting a foundation for the future. I’d rather make a dollar tomorrow than make a quarter today, but things went better than expected,” said Griffiths. “We wrote a check to CCSWFL for $6k. It was the most successful first-year fishing tournament in Lee County, and Lee is #3 in Florida. Our sponsors have already asked to have their same positions next year and teams have already said they can’t wait to do it again. Overall, it was a big hit!”

Griffiths reports that the Fish the 36 event was a great success. Another “Fish the 36” tournament is scheduled for the first weekend of June, 2015. A video from this year’s event will be available by late November 2014, at FishThe36.com.
